June 13, 2010: the 119th Commencement
The triumphant spirit of the University's 119th Commencement reflected both individual and group achievement in an assortment of moments and settings, such as the gathering in the Main Quad (1) for the Baccalaureate, a multifaith celebration held on June 12. It also pulsated with sentiments that were deeply emotional, such as hugs for parents, and as lighthearted as clown costumes (2). Ruby Garrett was light on her feet (3) during a Wacky Walk game of Duck, Duck, Goose; Gilberto Duenas, Edgar Gonzalez and Ulysses Rosas celebrated with traditional Aztec headgear (4). The message from a group of Mirrielees pals (5) was to grin big (say "trees"). In the frame: Joanna Evans, Laura Gravley, Ali Riley, Anne St. Geme, Eleanor Foote and Midori Uehara. For four former Dollies (6), the trick was to blend into the Wacky Walk as Waldos: Christina Landry, Jessica Murphy, Madeline Graber and Katie Peterson. It went without saying that anything that could be unfurled, waved, fluttered or flown (7) would be, in brilliant colors.
Guest speakers added a more serious aspect to the weekend's proceedings. A common thread linking talks on Saturday by Baccalaureate speaker Eboo Patel, executive director of the Interfaith Youth Core and Class Day speaker, philosophy professor Debra Satz, and on Sunday by Commencement speaker Susan E. Rice, U.S. ambassador to the U.N., was their plea to graduates to engage in service to help right the world's wrongs.
