So Big Game hasn’t been all that big the past few years. That doesn’t mean we’re ready
to give it up. The National Football League is trying to
trademark the phrase “big game.” Since the term “Super
Bowl” is trademarked, you often see ads enticing you
to buy a new TV or sofa before the “big game.” Trademarking
the term would prevent companies from using it without a
license. The NFL says its trademark would have no effect
on the fall college game, but Stanford and Cal aren’t
taking any chances. The schools may put rivalry aside to
work together to oppose the trademark, and the Cardinal is
contemplating applying for its own Big Game trademark. No
word on whether the NFL has plans to take on former basketball
player “Big Game James” Worthy or metal band
White Lion, whose third album was entitled Big Game.
