After clinching the Pac-10 titles in October, the No.
1 women’s and No. 2 men’s cross
country teams failed to garner second consecutive
national titles at the NCAAs November 22. The women
placed fifth and the men finished sixth. Redshirt freshman
Neftalem Araia led the Cardinal with an eighth-place
finish of 31:05 in the men’s 10,000 meter race.
. . . Senior outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani scored a
match-high 22 kills against Arizona on November 27 as
the women’s volleyball team ended
the regular season 24-6. At press time, the Cardinal
had been seeded 11th in the NCAAs. . . . Despite four
saves by redshirt senior goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart,
the No. 18 women’s soccer team
(13-6-3) fell 1-0 in double overtime to No. 4 Santa
Clara in the second round of the NCAA championships
November 14. This is the second year in a row the Cardinal’s
season has ended at the hands of the Broncos. Redshirt
senior forward/midfielder Marcie Ward started the game
despite a broken left foot. She lasted only seconds,
but her 86th appearance tied her with Marcia Wallis,
’03, for Stanford career games played and games
started. Ward also holds the career record for assists
with 40.
