count, athletes and coaches with Stanford ties earned
17 medals at the 2004 Olympic games in Athens: three
gold, seven silver and seven bronze. The Athens total
was four shy of the school-record 21 medals won at the
1924 Olympics in Paris. For photos, stories and a complete

website . . . . Stanford has resumed management
of its Equestrian Center and Red Barn, the 13-acre California
historic landmark where University founder Leland Stanford
bred his world-famous trotters. For the past 20 years,
the site has been leased as a public boarding stable
for about 100 horses. Under the new arrangement, Stanford’s
department of athletics, physical education and recreation
will continue private boarding while expanding classes
for students who want to learn to ride, as well as services
for Stanford’s intercollegiate equestrian team.
The University is renovating the 126-year-old facility
and appointing an advisory board that will include alumni
with equestrian and Olympic experience. . . . Stanford
athletics director Ted Leland, PhD ’82, has received
the 2004 Dick Enberg Award from the College Sports Information
Directors of America for his commitment to education
and student-athletes. Since Leland’s arrival in
1991, Stanford has won 46 national team championships
and 151 conference championships. |
