ONCE UPON A TIME: Amasa Leland Stanford was born March 9, 1824.

MR. COUTTS AND MR. PAGE: Leland Stanford bought the large Matadero Rancho from Peter Coutts and a neighboring tract from Mr. Page. Eventually El Palo Alto Ranch was 8,000 acres.
