Senior co-captain Lauren Faust and junior Hannah Luber
each scored three goals as the women’s
water polo team won the NCAA consolation match
for third place, 12-2, on May 9 at Stanford’s
Avery Aquatic Center. The No. 2 Cardinal lost its semifinal
match to third-ranked Loyola Marymount, 5-4, the day
before. Senior Wendy Watkins was named a first-team
All-American.
After clinching the Pac-10 title in late May, the No.
1 baseball team went 2-2 in the NCAA
regionals held at Sunken Diamond June 4-6. Stanford
opened the playoffs with a 10-4 win over UNLV and won
its third game, against St. John’s, 7-2. But Cardinal
pitching was no match for Long Beach State, which picked
up a 7-4 win behind standout starter Jered Weaver, and
later an 8-4 win to eliminate Stanford. The losses dashed
the team’s hopes for a sixth consecutive trip
to the College World Series. Leadoff hitter Sam Fuld
finished his career atop the Stanford record books in
runs scored and at bats, and second in hits and games
played. Sophomore infielder Jed Lowrie was named Pac-10
Player of the Year and ended the season with a .399
batting average.
The sixth-ranked softball team went
2-2 at the double-elimination College World Series in
Oklahoma in May. Both defeats came at the hands of eventual
champion UCLA. The Cardinal posted its highest-ever
Pac-10 finish with a tie for second and racked up 49
wins—the second best in school history.
