At Home on the Farm

It was a reunion for the ages. All ages, that is. A record-setting 5,440 Cardinal alumni and their 2,539 guests turned out for Reunion Homecoming in October—everyone from the Class of 2002, which joined in Saturday’s recent grad reunions, to the Class of 1929, represented at Sunday’s Cardinal Society lunch. For the first time, students were included, too, as sophomores, juniors and seniors lunched alongside graduates at the Saturday tailgate.

Alumni socialized at class parties, attended some 76 Classes Without Quizzes and the faculty roundtable, “Power of Influence, Influence of Power,” and cheered the Cardinal on (in vain, alas) at the football game against Washington State. And more than a few took pleasure in simply reconnecting with the day-to-day of student life. As Jenny Davis Young, ’88, wrote in her class scrapbook, “Falling asleep on the comfy chairs in Green, dodging bikes at the Post Office, throwing paper airplanes in MemAud—feels like I’m 18 years old all over again!” Mission accomplished.

Clark Sterling and Gretchen Gerwe Welch, both ’78, discuss life since Stanford at their class panel (left). And former Dollie Kathleen Page Elliott, ’63, catches up with a current counterpart, Clare Tobin, ’06, before the football game (above left).

Hargadon recent grads
OLD FRIENDS: Former dean of admission Fred Hargadon, now at Princeton, joins the festivities and gives a talk at the invitation of the Classes of ’78, ’83 and ’88. Graduates from the classes of 1999 to 2002 mingle with each other and with students at the tailgate.
