REUNIONS

A Supreme Experience

Photography by Cindy Pearson

IT WAS A WEEKEND packed with marquee names. On Friday morning, a panel of business heavyweights led by investment king Charles Schwab, '59, MBA '61, held forth at a roundtable. Later that day, California Gov. Gray Davis, '64, addressed a full house at Frost Amphitheater. Then on Saturday, three Stanford-bred U.S. Supreme Court justices -- Anthony Kennedy, '58, Sandra Day O'Connor, '50, JD '52, and Stephen Breyer, '59 -- traded ideas for 90 minutes before a rapt crowd in the sun-dappled oak grove outside Bowman Alumni House.

And, of course, there was the now-traditional crush of "classes without quizzes" (78 of them, most taught by Stanford professors), parties (more than 50) and the Saturday football game (the Cardinal pulled out a 21-17 win over Oregon State in the fourth quarter).

But for many of the record 5,500 alumni, family and friends who attended Reunion Homecoming October 14 to 18, the small moments counted just as much. "The big names are fun to watch and listen to, but the weekend is made by seeing your old friends and making new ones," says Bill Shibley, '69, a lawyer in Long Beach, Calif. "When you run into someone you haven't seen in five or 10 years, it almost seems like the time disappears."
