FRESHMEN

Here They Come

THE FRESHMEN who step onto campus this fall will be the last class to enter Stanford this century. They are a diverse group -- representing 49 U.S. states (all but North Dakota) and 39 foreign countries. And they are accomplished -- nearly one-third had a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in high school, and 16 percent scored 1,550 or better on their SATs.
