The long view: In 1909, Berton Crandall photographed the front of the University from the present-day site of the Littlefield Center.

PRE-QUAKE: The challenge from sophomores to freshmen was probably issued in 1909. The old chemistry building, shown here before 1906, survived the earthquake but with few of its chimneys intact.

PICTURE THIS: (Top) Memorial Arch was erected in 1900, and Memorial Church opened its doors in 1903. After the earthquake, the Church was reconstructed except for the steeple, but the arch was never rebuilt. The statue of the family was removed in the 1930s. (Bottom) In 1910, the Quad's west gate opened onto paddock-style fencing, reminiscent of the original stock farm. This open space is now the site of the new Science and Engineering Quad.
