Water: The New Oil?
Presenters: Jenna Davis and Jeff Koseff
Around the world, demand for freshwater continues to rise, driven by population growth, urbanization and economic development. Yet the total volume of available freshwater on Earth is finite. In the face of these growing needs, along with increasing variability in water resources availability driven by climate change, how can we ensure adequate water supplies for human needs and ecosystem health?

Around the world, demand for freshwater continues to rise, driven by population growth, urbanization and economic development. Yet the total volume of available freshwater on Earth is finite. In the face of these growing needs, along with increasing variability in water resources availability driven by climate change, how can we ensure adequate water supplies for human needs and ecosystem health? What role can reclamation and reuse play in water supply? Given the emerging nexus between water and energy, is desalinization a sustainable way of providing water for growing urban populations? How will safe, reliable water and sanitation services be extended to protect human health globally? Potential solutions to the problems these questions pose, and other problems and possible solutions will be presented and discussed.

The New Global Context for Technology Innovation
Presenters: Teresa Meng and Paul Yock
Teresa Meng and Paul Yock have both taken time in their research careers to help start new companies based on their discoveries. In 1999, Professor Meng founded Atheros Communications, Inc., a leading developer of semiconductor systems for wireless network communications products. Dr. Yock founded Cardiovascular Imaging Systems in 1986 and has since cofounded several other medical technology companies.

In this session, Professors Meng and Yock will share their innovation stories, which ended in the launching of successful companies. They will then evaluate the current environment for innovation—one they find to be increasingly favorable outside of, rather than inside, the United States.
