Unraveling the Mysteries of the Brain
Presenters: Bill Newsome and Krishna V. Shenoy
Neuroscience has never been more exciting. We are at the threshold of deciphering human emotions, feelings, consciousness and behavior.
Presenters: Bill Newsome and Krishna V. Shenoy
Neuroscience has never been more exciting. We are at the threshold of deciphering human emotions, feelings, consciousness and behavior. Our understanding of the brain and nervous system—from molecules, cells, circuits and structures to functions for life and human behavior—is an incredible challenge and an opportunity where Stanford is uniquely poised to play a lead role. Shining light on the nature vs. nurture debate and treating paralyzed patients by "eavesdropping" on electrical neural brain signals are some of the exciting Stanford discoveries this session will explore.

Where Is Runaway Growth Taking China? The Coming Economic and Political Stresses
Presenters: Scott Rozelle and Larry Diamond
China's growth has had an unprecedented impact on its citizens. The nation is marketizing, industrializing, urbanizing and modernizing at a breathtaking pace. But these same forces are creating economic and social stresses.
Presenters: Scott Rozelle and Larry Diamond
China's growth has had an unprecedented impact on its citizens. The nation is marketizing, industrializing, urbanizing and modernizing at a breathtaking pace. But these same forces are creating economic and social stresses. If China does not figure out how to educate and feed the tens of millions of children from poor rural areas, a development crisis could develop, with profound political consequences. At the same time, economic growth will also lead to a more educated, middle-class society like those that have spurred transitions to democracy elsewhere in Asia. The speakers will share their thoughts on where China is headed.

Improving Education: The Connection between Motivation, Mind-set and Achievement Presenters: Carol Dweck and Deborah Stipek
Research finds that a student's motivation is more important than IQ in predicting achievement, but current U.S. educational strategies undermine student motivation, constructive effort and meaningful learning.
Presenters: Carol Dweck and Deborah Stipek
Research finds that a student's motivation is more important than IQ in predicting achievement, but current U.S. educational strategies undermine student motivation, constructive effort and meaningful learning. Our speakers will share their perspectives on how a "fixed" mind-set—the belief that intelligence is fixed—can compromise a student's motivation and achievement, while teaching a "growth" mind-set can have the opposite effect. They will also discuss the effects of praise on mind-set and motivation as well as their ideas for improving student motivation and achievement in the classroom.
